Strut Your Mutt
Last Saturday I volunteered at the Strut you Mutt event in West Jordan, Utah. Larry and Wally joined us from the center to walk the walk. Both are up for adoption and enjoyed all the attention they received in their own way.
Wally jumped for joy and bounced around accepting loves from the humans. His wiry hair hanging in his eyes and happy personality was quite appealing. He was very popular and had three different potential adopters ask question about him.
Larry on the other hand was calm and collected. “Laid back Larry” sat on the chair next to me watching everyone walk by. Hundreds of people and hundreds of dogs attended this great event. Larry had one suitor, I hope the suitor realizes what a great dog he is and give him a forever home. I don’t think he even barked once during our outing.
Always think Adoption First. Check out the picture gallery for more pictures from the day.
Fashion Photo Shoot
January 14th is “Dress-Up Your Pet Day” and the 15th is “Hat Day”. Dressing up your pet has been around since I was a kid.
Back when photographs were black and white, I had a cat named Pussy Willow. He was a big gray tomcat and kept me and my siblings entertained.
Now in the day of color, digital photos the trend continues. Abbey and Dusty spent a few days with me while their owners were away. Crazy me, I went to the dollar store and purchased doll clothes. See their pictures in our picture gallery and carousel.
So, gather the kids, grandkids and neighborhood friends to dress up your pets for a Fashion Photo Shoot. We’d love to see your pictures, send them and your stories to Furriends@PetCion.com.

Parking Lot Puppies
By Charlie Serna
Salt Lake City Pet Rescue Examiner
The scene at Wal-Mart Thursday evening was typical for rush hour. The store was crowded, the parking lot was full. And on the grassy corner, right near the driveway in and out of the parking lot, a group of people had set up shop to sell a pile of puppies. The puppies romped and played on the grass. And on the curb. And nearly out into the street as shoppers entered and exited the parking lot in their cars. Dangerous to the puppies? Yes. To the people in their cars? Yes. Illegal? Yes.
–Don’t buy puppies from sellers in parking lots. The decision to bring a dog into your home should be carefully thought out, and considered as a lifetime commitment. At least for the lifetime of the dog. It shouldn’t be an impulse buy. If you want something cute and cuddly from Wal-Mart, take a walk down the stuffed animal aisle.
–Adopt an abandoned puppy from an animal shelter or rescue group. Today’s shelter dogs are probably last week’s parking lot puppies anyway, only now they’ve been vaccinated and your adoption fee includes altering surgery.
The best way to put parking lot puppy sellers out of business is to dry up their demand. If no one buys today, then they probably won’t be back two more days from now to sell. Read More…
Does anyone else vacuum their bed?
As I’m vacuuming the quilt on my bed with my hand held vacuum I wonder, “Does anybody else vacuum their bed?” I love my furry animals and that includes sleeping with me at night. And when I’m not sleeping, they are sleeping on my bed during the day.
I used to think when my child was grown up and move out of the house I could have nice things. Now he’s gone and I still don’t have “nice” things. When I go to buy a couch, I keep in mind that it is one big scratching post. The cats are pretty good about not sharpening their nails on the couch, but sometimes it is too much of a temptation.
So back to vacuuming… To ease the constant battle with the fur, I drape a beach towel at the foot of my bed where Linus likes to sleep. It is easier to wash towels than the quilt every week. But the quilt gets washed plenty. Thank heavens for bargain stores where you can buy “washable” quilts for $30.00.
I will never have a gorgeous bed with rich linens and pillows as seen on HGTV, because I prefer my furry, warm and purring bed partners to silk and glamour any day.
